Police Lieutenant, Sergeant Earn Promotions

Both gentlemen took their oaths during a brief ceremony at Village Hall.

Lieutenant Thomas Mauren and Sergeant Matthew Walsh received promotions during the October 17, 2019 Board meeting.

Lt. Mauren has been with the Garden City Police Department for 28.5 years. He was hired June 24, 1991 starting as a Patrol Officer. In 1997 he was moved to the Tactical Unit. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2001 and has been in charge of the Tactical Unit for the last 10 years. He has also served as the Department’s Quartermaster and grant writer. He resides in Suffolk County with his wife of 22 years, Susan. They have three children, Brianna, 21, Thomas, 19, and Ashley, 15.

“Lieutenant Mauren has proven himself to be an exceptional officer, supervisor and leader. We have no doubt he will excel in this new role,” Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson said.

Sgt. Walsh grew up in Valley Stream. He received an Associate degree from Nassau Community College and a Bachelor’s degree from John Jay College. He joined the New York City Police Department in 1995 and upon graduation from the Police Academy was assigned to work in the 114th Precinct in Queens. During his tenure in the NYPD, Sgt. Walsh attained the rank of Sergeant, assigned to the 81st Precinct in Brooklyn. In March 2006, he left the New York City Police Department and accepted a position with the Garden City Police Department. During his tenure in Garden City, he has served as Field Training Officer for new recruits and has proven himself to be a leader among his peers.

“We are confident Sergeant Walsh will continue the tradition of excellence and professionalism we have come to know and expect from our Police Department,” Commissioner Jackson said.
