Remembering the Lives Lost on Sept. 11

There are many ceremonies around the county where you can pay your respects.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the tragic day that took thousands of lives and changed even more forever.

It's important to remember what happened that day and those who were lost. There are many memorial ceremonies and other events happening around the area this weekend where you can pay your respects and remember the lives that were lost that day.

Nassau County Firefighters Museum: The Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center will be offering free admission all day on Sunday, Sept. 11. The museum’s newly-expanded 9/11 exhibit provides a solemn venue for those wishing to remember and honor the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 -- as well as commemorating those who have lost their lives since that day from 9/11-related illnesses.

Nassau County: A Sunset Candlelight and Remembrance Ceremony will take place Thursday, Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. (rain or shine) at the 9/11 Memorial in Eisenhower Park, near Parking Field 6.

Town of Hempstead: The Town of Hempstead will present Long Island's largest 9/11 memorial ceremony beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Point Lookout Beach. The 9/11 ecumenical service of remembrance at Town Park Point Lookout (located on Lido Boulevard at the end of the Loop Parkway) is free and all are invited to attend. Limited seating is available on a first come, first served basis.

Town of North Hempstead: The town will be holding its annual 9/11 memorial service this year on Sept. 11 at 8 a.m. at Mary Jane Davies Green, located on Plandome Road in Manhasset, which is across the street from Town Hall. The memorial service will remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, including the 56 individuals who called the Town of North Hempstead home.

City of Long Beach: City officials, clergy from the community and Long Beach veterans will gather to take a moment to remember those lives lost on 9/11. The Remembrance Gathering will take place at 8 a.m. at the Recreation Center Parking Lot on Sunday, Sept. 11. At 7:30 p.m., the fire department will hold a ceremony on West Park Avenue at Lafayette Boulevard to pay tribute to the victims and honor the first responders.
On Sept. 14 at 7 p.m., join friends and neighbors for a very special event as Gregory Fried, M.D., former New York City Police Department Executive Chief Surgeon & NYPD Medal of Valor Recipient, recounts his personal story of the events of Sept. 11, illustrated by NYPD photos, some of which have never been seen. This program will be held on the sixth floor of Long Beach City Hall, 1 West Chester Street, with refreshments provided courtesy of Long Beach Aware.

City of Glen Cove: The city will hold a sunset memorial service to honor those who died on 9/11. The ceremony will be held at Glen Cove’s 9/11 Memorial in Pratt Park, located at 10 Glen Cove Ave., at 6:30 p.m. Candles will be lit at the close of the ceremony to honor the lives lost on that tragic day.

Village of Garden City: The village will be holding a memorial ceremony on Sept. 11 at noon at the Fireman’s Memorial, located on the Village Green.

Village of Rockville Centre: Rockville Centre will be holding a memorial ceremony on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. on the Village Green, located on Maple Avenue.

Village of Mineola: The village will be holding a remembrance ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at Memorial Park, located at 195 Marcellus Road.

Village of Freeport: The Police Benevolence Association of the Freeport Police Department will be holding a memorial ceremony at the rifle range at 125 Buffalo Ave. at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. Later that day, Our Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 37 South Ocean Ave., will be holding a special service in memory of the victims of 9/11 at 11:30 a.m. And Sunday night there will be a Neighborhood Memorial at the Bayview Traffic Circle on South Bayview Avenue at 7 p.m.

Village of Lynbrook: The village will be holding its 9/11 ceremony on Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Memorial Park on the grounds of Village Hall, located at 1 Columbus Drive.

Village of Malverne: Join the village for an Evening of Remembrance honoring those who lost their lives on Sept. 11. The candlelight ceremony begins at 8 p.m. at the Sept. 11 monument near the gazebo.

Village of Cedarhurst: The village will be holding a memorial service on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Andrew J. Parise Park, located on Cedarhurst Avenue.

Bellmore: The Bellmore Fire Department will be holding a 9/11 Memorial Mass on Sunday, Sept 11. at St Barnabas Roman Catholic Church, located on Bedford Avenue in Bellmore, at 5 p.m. It will be followed by a wreath Laying at the Bellmore Fire Department Headquarters at 6:30 pm.

Merrick: Merrick will be honoring the victims of 9/11 on Sept. 11 at the community’s annual street fair. The Merrick Fire Department will unveil a new piece of steel from the World Trade Center at its memorial, located Merrick Avenue and Sunrise Highway, at noon.

Hicksville: The Hicksville Fire Department will host a remembrance ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 11 to pay tribute to an ex-chief and honorary chief who lost their lives on that tragic day. A commemoration of the fifteenth anniversary of September 11 kicks off at 11 a.m. at the Strong Street Fire Station memorial.

Levittown: The Levittown Fire Department will be holding a memorial service on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Gardiners Avenue Firehouse, located at 120 Gardiners Ave.

West Hempstead: The West Hempstead community will gather for a 9/11 Memorial at Hall's Pond Park on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. That day, there will also be a blood drive in memory of Ex-Chief Robert J. DeAngelis Jr. at the Lakeview Fire Department from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Seaford: Please join the Seaford community in honoring the five Seaford High School alumni and all those who lost their lives tragically on Sept. 11, 2001. The 9/11 SHS Memorial Candle Lighting ceremony will be held at Seaford High School, located at 1575 Seamans Neck Road, on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7. This year, there will also be a dedication of a World Trade Center artifact and Survivor Tree.

Plainview-Old Bethpage: The Plainview-Old Bethpage Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a special tribute marking the 15th anniversary of 9/11 this Sunday, Sept. 11. A new moving sculpture recently built in honor to those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack will be formally presented to the community. The ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m., rain or shine, at the Alma Craib Garden at the Plainview-Old Bethapge Library at 999 Old Country Road.
