School Bus Strikes Overpass: Garden City Police

The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Oct. 2.

  • At 1 p.m. on Sept. 25, officers responded to Carteret Place for a report of a person entering a home through an unlocked door after ringing the doorbell, and trying unsuccessfully to open two other doors. The person fled after being confronted by the house aide inside the home. Officers searched the area and located the man on Golf Club Lane. He was placed under arrest and charged with second-degree burglary.
  • Vehicles parked at a Somerset Avenue residence were entered during the overnight hours on Sept. 25. There was no loss reported.
  • A school bus traveling east struck the Chestnut Street overpass on Sept. 27. The bus suffered damage and was towed from the scene. No injuries were reported. The driver, a 70-year-old man from Hempstead, was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs.
  • Officers investigated a report of a burglary at a Brixton Road home on Sept. 27. The burglar opened through an open window on the first floor and stole jewelry and other items. The investigation is ongoing.
  • Officers investigated an identity theft report where someone used a resident’s personal information to take out a $21,000 loan on Sept. 27.
  • As a result of a two-vehicle crash investigation on Franklin Avenue at Main Street on Sept. 28, officers arrested one of the drivers, a 21-year-old man from Port Washington, for DWI. No injuries were reported.
  • Officers investigated the theft of property from a vehicle parked at a Cathedral Avenue home on Sept. 28. During a search of the area, officers arrested a 20-year-old man from Hempstead for outstanding New York Park Police warrants for petty larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
  • A vehicle car south on Franklin Avenue on Sept. 28 was stopped by an officer on 2nd Street for aggressive driving violations. Upon investigation, the driver, a 57-year-old man from Westbury, was arrested for driving with seven license suspensions, improper license plates, unregistered vehicle, excessive speed and unsafe lane usage.
  • An officer was assigned to a traffic light malfunction on Nassau Boulevard at Merillon Avenue on Sept. 30.
  • As a result of a traffic stop investigation on Clinton Road on Sept. 30, a 23-year-old man was charged with driving with a suspended license, excessive speed and improper lane signaling.
  • A package was reported stolen from the front porch of a Meadow Street residence on Oct. 1.
  • Officers responded to Princeton Street for wires down in the roadway on Oct. 1. Upon investigation, it was determined that a truck, which was detoured from a utility company work zone on New Hyde Park Road, struck the wires. Firefighters responded and safeguarded the area.
  • Upon investigation of a vehicle illegally turning into Parking Field 7S from Franklin Avenue on Oct. 1, a 22-year-old male was charged with driving with a suspended license and disregarding a traffic control device.
