Suspicious Backpack Causes Police Response: Garden City PD

The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending June 4.

  • Officers investigated a report of a person entering a vehicle at a Magnolia Avenue residence on May 29. There is no loss reported.
  • Officers investigated the cashing of a fraudulent check in the amount of $1,800 against a resident’s checking account on May 30.
  • An officer assisted a driver with the removal of a cat stuck in the undercarriage of their car in Parking Field 9 on May 30.
  • A resident reported receiving a phone call from a person claiming to be from PSEG on May 31 who claimed the power to the home would be turned off unless the resident paid $800 immediately. The resident realized this was a scam and called the police.
  • A traffic stop investigation on Franklin Avenue on June 1 resulted in the arrest of a 24-year-old man from Hempstead for DWI, unsafe lane usage and avoiding a traffic signal at an intersection.
  • Officers investigated a criminal mischief at a 2nd Street home where the front window was found damaged on June 2.
  • A mountain bike was reported stolen from a Willow Street garage on June 2.
  • Officers responded for a report of a suspicious backpack on the platform of the Country Life Press Railroad Station on June 2. The backpack was cleared by a MTA Police Department Canine Unit and removed from the scene.
  • As a result of a power outage on June 2, officers responded to a traffic light malfunction at the intersection of Rockaway and Stewart Avenues.
  • Fire and police personnel responded to 1300 Franklin Ave. on June 4 for a smoke condition caused by a burnt air conditioner motor. The building was deemed safe by the firefighters and the occupants were permitted to return.
