Sweet Treats for a Sweet Tooth

The Cupcake Corner hosts a sugar cookie decorating class.

Local youngsters turned pastry chefs got the chance to create their very own sugar cookies and aprons Thursday at The Cupcake Corner. A pizza dinner topped off the creative workshop, one of many owner and village resident Laura Graney offers throughout the year.

Katherine, Graney's assistant, distributed plastic gloves and balls of dough to the children, who were not intimidated by the task. As they kneaded, Joseph announced, "Mine's so mushy!" to which Katie enthusiastically declared, "Wow! This is mushy!"

As the group picked out cookie cutters from a box of vibrantly colored shapes and designs, Joseph, a self-proclaimed "five and three quarters" years old, said he wanted to make a "really big circle!" Katie searched through the box and found a Cupid's heart and arrow, which she every eagerly showed off to the rest of the baking clan.

Off went the cookies into the oven! While the treats baked, everyone decorated a personalized apron. The group was very pensive as they delicately spelled out their names on the cloth and decided what type of picture they wanted on their apron. Three-year-old Samantha proudly announced, "Look Mommy! I wrote an 'S' for Samantha!"

Dedicated to the task at hand, even when Graney arrived with the pizza the kids kept right on working on their aprons. Palettes were just as diverse as their creations, and selections ranged from Sicilian for Joseph, "noodle" (baked zita) for Katie and Maggie and Greek salad pizza for Samantha.

The cookies finished baking just in time for dessert. Samantha chanted "Cookies, cookies are the best! It's a cookie party day!" as the pizza plates were cleared. Hearts, ducks and circles were amongst the popular cookie shape choices.

Each child took a different color and began decorating his or her cookie with frosting and candy. Joseph opted for a blue circle while Briana created a red heart. Adorning the cookies with candy was a "sweet" idea that the kids loved, and they sprinkled sugar from Pixie Stix on top of the frosting.

Purple hands, blue faces and big smiles were the norm as the hour-long class came to a close. A few of the kids snuck bites of their cookies as they worked. Katie summed up everyone's feelings when she exclaimed, "This is so good!"
