Veterans Day Ceremony Marks 100th Anniversary of WWI Armistice

William Bradford Turner Post 265 held its annual ceremony at the war memorial on Seventh Street.

On November 11, 1918, world leaders signed the Armistice ending World War I. Ceremonies are being held all over the world to mark the occasion. Right here in Garden City, William Bradford Turner Post 265 held its annual ceremony at the war memorial on Seventh Street, not far from a tree recently planted to honor William Bradford Turner, who, while serving in Ronssoy, France during World War I saved the lives of fellow soldiers until he was finally surrounded and killed by the enemy.

Post Commander Frank Tauches welcomed veterans, the Women's Auxiliary, residents and Village leaders. "It was at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 that the guns of the first Great War ceased fire ... It was the day that the idea for this day was conceived. Let us now, in a solemn moment of silence, renew our pledge that these honored dead shall not have died in vain."

"As a community this is a day we remember our veterans and those serving in the military today. We take pride in these memorials to our fellow citizens," Mayor Brian Daughney added.
