Wilton: Outdoor Dining Important Ingredient to Economic Health

Thirty-three Garden City restaurants are offering al fresco dining this season.

Garden City kicked off its fourteenth season of al fresco dining April 1 and Mother Nature has provided the perfect backdrop.

According to John Wilton, chair of the Garden City Merchants, Professionals and Retailers group, "Outdoor dining is a very important ingredient to the economic health of our downtown. The weather has been good of late and hopefully it will continue. Please understand that that's vital to the net profit of our merchants."

The English translation of al fresco means "in the fresh" (air). Years back, the Garden City Chamber of Commerce requested the village change its code to allow for outdoor dining by permit.

Officials believed the project was an effective way to encourage shopping in Garden City's downtown, serving as an enhancement for businesses on Franklin Avenue, Seventh Street and New Hyde Park Road.
