A Celebration of Womanhood

Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce set to sponsor evening gathering at the city's Webb Institute.

For many, Thursday evening will be a time of bonding and learning about important issues facing the women population today as the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce is slated to sponsor a Women with a New Attitude; Meeting the Demands of 2010 event at the Webb Institute.

The event, organizers said, will feature a fashion show, vendors from boutiques, hair and make-up artists, speakers on finance and health and more.

"We've done fashion shows in years past, but I wanted to include other elements into celebrating womanhood and highlight concerns that women deal with such as finance and health," said Phyllis Gorham, the chamber's executive director. "I wanted to do something with greater meaning and enhance the enjoyment of the fashion show with education and speakers."

Dr. Neeta Shah, Vice President of Women's Health Services at North Shore-LIJ Health System, is scheduled to speak on health. Shah, who is a leader in a medical system that includes Glen Cove Hospital, is in charge of the coordination and expansion of women's health services as well as ensuring that the health system offers a range of clinical programs to meet women's healthcare needs.

Presenting on the finance end will be Marie Coyle and Debora H. Bushman, two certified financial planners from Merrill Lynch. Coyle is also a past president of the chamber.

"Marie is an advocate of financial independence for women," Gorham said. "She has taught adult education classes at Glen Cove High School and is a frequent speaker at libraries, women's clubs and chamber meetings."

The event will mark the second one that the chamber has hosted in recent weeks. The organization also held its annual Culinary Delights affair at The Metropolitan on Pratt Boulevard last month.

The women's event will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $40. For more information and tickets, call (516) 676-6666.
