City Teens Go Gaga for 'Twilight'

Glen Cove movie theater attracts a full house for first showing of vampire film's third installment.

Teens packed into the Glen Cove Theatres Wednesday for the midnight premiere of "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse."

The theater, which is on School Street in the city's downtown area, was filled with many enthusiastic "Twilight" fans, some came with their parents while others strolled in with a large group of friends.

Although mostly girls attended the first showing, it didn't stop a few young guys from joining the crowd to watch the third installment of the vampire film as well.

Enthused fans could be spotted heading into the theater around 11 p.m. Tuesday to get a good seat. Some wore "Twilight"-themed T-shirts, and a couple of girls even decorated their faces.

One young "Twilight" fan, Kathleen Murphy, said she saw the previous two movies, and anticipated that the third will be equally as good.

"I like Robert Pattinson the best," she said about the actor who plays the movie's leading man Edward Cullen. "I've read all of the books and 'New Moon' is my favorite."

And Murphy is not alone.

Most — if not all — of the "Twilight" fans who Patch spoke to on Wednesday said they have read the entire vampire-romance novel series by American author Stephenie Meyer.

Resident Emelia Carmody said she read each book multiple times and is interested to see if the third movie follows its written counterpart.

"Apparently this is supposed to be the best one, so we'll see," she said. "I'm a Jasper girl. Nobody appreciates him, but I love him."

It seems, however, that not everyone at the theater was enamored by the same characters because the favorites varied.

"We're team Jacob," residents, Ashley Casale, and, Jenna Moglia, said in unison in support of the werewolf character portrayed by actor Taylor Lautner.

The large crowd in the wee hours of the morning in the city showed that the pop-culture phenomenon film can even spark teen mania in a quiet place like Glen Cove.

David Mott, the movie theater's manager, said he had to open a second screening at the last minute because the midnight showing attracted so many people. The cinema has six screens and each theater serves about 240 people.

"So far, we've sold out one screening," Mott said, adding that almost 25 people visited the theater to purchase tickets for Wednesday showings just after the midnight premiere. "We don't get that so much in Glen Cove."
