Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club members Amaya C. and Bernardo L. have been named Youth of the Month for September.
Ten-year-old Amaya who is in the fifth grade, is the Junior Youth of the Month. She loves to read and write and has a passion for music. She plays the viola and is eager to learn how to play the guitar and other string instruments. Amaya hopes to pursue a degree in music someday but in the meantime, is looking forward to writing composition and refining her musical talent in the Club’s recording studio. In addition to music, Amaya enjoys playing soccer and basketball and participates in gymnastics and hip hop dance programs. She has been a member for nearly four years and attends the Club regularly. Amaya can often be found in the Club gymnasium playing sports, reading in the Learning Center or mastering her computer skills in the Technology Lab. “The Club means a lot to me. It’s a place for me to go to after school where I feel safe and get to be with my friends,” said Amaya.
Bernardo, 12, is the Senior Youth of the Month. He is in the seventh grade and his interests lean towards science, art and music. He plays the violin and enjoys building things. In fact, he hopes to pursue a degree in engineering to become a mechanical engineer. Bernardo has been a member for four years and attends daily during the school year and enrolls in the Club’s Summer program. When at the Club, he enjoys taking on creative projects in the Art room while mastering his tech skills in the Technology Lab. “The Club is a very good place for me. It makes me feel safe when I am here. When I need help, I get help. It’s also where I have met and made friends from different schools. The Club is a very inclusive place. The staff makes everyone feel like family,” said Bernardo.
