
From celebrating Red Ribbon Week to hosting their 10th Annual Lights on After School, Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club has been busy with outreach events and activities revolving around community and the impact the Club makes on the youth of Glen Cove.
Red Ribbon week was held from 10/21-10/25, and focused on prevention and awareness of substance abuse. Club staff and youth spent the week committing to a drug free life and adopting healthy lifestyles. Many local volunteers participated in the awareness initiative including LIU Post Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and Josh Good, founder of Community Service Made Easy Project as well as lifelong Glen Cove resident, Eric Owens, a community Educator, experienced in areas of conflict resolution, prevention and intervention. He is a NYS Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC-T).
In the midst of Red Ribbon Week, the Club held their Annual Lights on After School Open House on Thursday, October 24th to celebrate the Club’s after school programs and the important role it plays in the lives of children and families in the Glen Cove community.

This year’s event highlighted an impressive team of Group Leaders who are essential to the success of the Club’s programs. Many of the Group Leaders were graduates of the Summer Youth Employment program, designed to help and prepare teens for the job market and provide them with skills to better meet the requirements and expectations of employment opportunities.
Over 200 members and their families were in attendance along with community leaders, local businesses and guests which included a visit from the Glen Cove Fire Department and a tour of a fire truck. Activities focused on family engagement and bringing parents and kids together to participated in fun family driving projects including a family selfie scavenger hunt; pizza creations in the health & wellness center; jeopardy in the recreation center; relay races in the gym; group sing along and circle time in the dance studio. Teen members provided guided tours to guests; Entertainment, food and beverages were generously donated and supported by local restaurants and businesses. Local businesses Glen Cove Library, North Shore Alliance, EXIT Realty Dreams and Long Island Cares provided information and resources to families including opportunities for employment, volunteerism, family recreation activities and more.

To build on Red Ribbon week and Lights on After school, the Club hosted a toiletry drive competition with close to 100 toiletry and personal care items collected. All collected items will be donated to local veteran’s agency in honor of Veteran’s Day.
