Kids Ready for the Next Snowfall

Thanks to the Glen Cove PBA and Police Officers, and the Glen Cove Rotary Club, GCBGC members are ready to embark on their own Frozen adventure with new coats and winter accessories keeping them warm and prepared for the winter season.

The Club’s Winter program prompted these three organizations to take action. Twenty-one members experienced the magic of the season from a loving community helping to get them ready for the chilly time of year.

The program started on Cyber Monday when ten Club members visited with Rotarians at the neighboring Tiegerman School to select from winter apparel purchased by the Rotary Club. “Being part of Rotary means service to your community. Dress A Child is one of the most gratifying events that I have experienced. Being able to supply kids with warms coats, hats, gloves, scarves, socks and boots is a blessing,” said Rotarian and Community Relations Liaison at The Regency, Amy Fleischer. “I fell in love with all the children and so glad we can help.”

On Giving Tuesday, the international day of giving, Glen Cove police officers made it a very special shopping experience for eleven children and teens, who were individually paired and serving as benefactors to the young members. This combined effort raised $1,200 from the Glen Cove PBA, thirty individual officers and Gritty Buddha. This community driven program became the highlight of the year for Club kids who received new cold weather gear but also bonded and had fun spending time with respected community leaders. “I’ve never experienced this before. The officer made me feel special and it didn’t matter that I couldn’t speak English too well,” said 12 year-old GCBGC member Carlos S. “We were happy to see the support of the unit and giving back to the community we serve. The Glen Cove PBA and Police Department look forward to a strong partnership with the Club next year,” said Police Officer Matthew Gillespie. “We really thank the Club professionals for their commitment to this program. It was a rewarding experience for all of us to spend time with the kids,” added Officer and GCBGC Board Member Darren Pittman.

“We can’t put a price on the mentorship experience the Officers and Rotarians provided our members, the love and attention that came with these days of giving is truly incredible. We are very lucky to have such supporting and caring leaders in our community. This was a magical evening for many,” said GCBGC Executive Director, Franca Trunzo Chunga.
