Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Announces 2023 Scholarship Recipient

Dillon A. Smith has been selected to receive Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club’s Louis M. Sanford $8,000 College Scholarship, named in honor of past Executive Director for his commitment to continuing education and improving the lives of Glen Cove youth.

Dillon first joined the Club at the age of six. During his tenure, he matured from a shy young child to a self-sufficient adult, now a freshman navigating his way through college at LIU Post and majoring in Video Game Design.

Dillon credits the Club and the staff who helped him discover his interests and eagerness to learn, play sports and make friends. “I've matured and grown since I have been coming to the Club. The staff helped me overcome my shyness and become more social. They also provide a sense of security for me.” He flourished in the Teen Program and the technology center where he played an active role in specialized initiatives, spearheading activities and field trips. Dillon also found a love for sports and his interest in Golf after participating in the First Tee golf program which launched in 2014.

From dedicated Club member to summer volunteer, Dillon joined the team of Youth Development Professionals and enjoys being a role model to the younger kids. “I never thought that after 12 years of being a Club member, that I would become a staff member, but I realized I love being a mentor and helping kids. It feels good to see everyone smiling and happy at the Club," said Dillon. “I am proud of my myself, and grateful to know that I always have the Club to support me along the way,” he added.

To be eligible for the Louis M. Sanford Scholarship, all candidates are required to exemplify a sense of commitment and dedication to academics, community, their family, their future, and the Club.
