Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Awards Scholarship

Isabel Blas is the Recipient of the 2018 Louis M. Sanford Scholarship

Isabel Blas has been selected to receive the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club’s prestigious Louis M. Sanford College Scholarship, named in honor of past Executive Director Louis M. Sanford for his 33 years of leadership and his commitment to continuing education.

Isabel, 18, is in a senior at Glen Cove High School. She is an outstanding, hardworking student and a member of the National Honor Society who is ranked third in her class. She has received several recognitions including making the Principle’s List, being honored as Student of the Month and receiving an award for Excellence in AP World History, English and Astronomy and Recognition by the Nassau County Legislature. In addition to her commitment to her education, Isabel, an aspiring journalist, is actively involved in many extracurricular activities including DECA, working as a camera-person and news anchor at the School’s TV Station, and journalist and photographer at the school’s paper.

Isabel has been an active Club member for the past five years and has demonstrated excellent academic and leadership achievements as well as integrity during her tenure, making her the ideal candidate to receive this Scholarship. She is often found helping her peers and younger members with their homework. In fact, many teen members have credited Isabel with their improved grades. Isabel has also volunteered as well as worked as a Camp counselor in the Club’s Summer Program. Isabel will receive $8,000 from the Scholarship, distributed over four years. She has been accepted to SUNY New Paltz where she plans on studying Communications and Broadcasting.

“We are thrilled to award Isabel with this Scholarship. She is a very hard working member and has always represented herself in a mature and kind hearted manner towards her fellow Club members. She is always willing to help and is a great role model to the younger members and her friends. She has a great future ahead of her,” said Teen Program Director, Breanna Townsell.

In order to be eligible for the Louis M. Sanford Scholarship, members must be seniors accepted to a four year university, college or accredited trade school and have been actively engaged in the Club for a minimum of two years. All candidates are required to exemplify a sense of commitment and dedication to their academics, their community, their family, their future and the Club. Applicants must also establish a financial need for aid.
