Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Celebrates Reading

PARP brings amazing stories and exciting new activities to the Club.

Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club recently participated in Pick A Reading Partner (PARP) a program designed to help children foster a positive attitude towards reading. PARP was developed by the late New York State Senator James Donovan who played an important role in shaping state policy on education. The initiative also encourages family members and those who play an important role in a child’s life to read to kids daily, creating life-long readers.

PARP took place at the Club during the week of January 22 when all program areas participated in a ‘Drop What You’re Doing and Read!’ campaign to inspire members to read silently or as a group followed by participation in a range of activities related to the readings and interests.

Associate Director Ms. Desirae (O’Neill) shared one of her favorites; Goodnight Yankees by Brad M. Epstein with members ages 6-8. After the book reading, Ms. Desirae and her group created a ‘Home Run’ Tic-Tac-Toe game while enjoying baseball stadium snacks. Program Director Ms. Jackie (Telleria) dressed the part as Darth Vader as she read a series of Star Wars short stories. The session concluded with a crafting activity in which members created lightsabers.

“PARP is important because you get to read with other people and learn new words. It can help make you a better writer,” said Chelsea C., 8, who read Violet the Painting Fairy by Daisy Meadows.

“With all the excitement PARP brought to the Club in its fun and engaging activities, our members will never forget the importance of settling in with a good book,” says Franca Trunzo, Executive Director.
