Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club February Youth of the Month

Monica JB. and Alana B. have been named Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club February Youth of the Month.

Monica JB. and Alana B. have been named Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club February Youth of the Month.

This is Monica’s second time being named Youth of the Month in a year. She received her last nomination in May of 2105. 12 year-old Monica is a seventh grader at Robert M. Finley School who plans on pursuing a career in the medical field. Her sister is a neo-natal nurse and Monica too hopes to become either a nurse or a physician. Science is her favorite subject but she also enjoys playing her viola. A member for six years, Monica attends the Club every day and credits staff for helping her with her homework and providing her with a positive atmosphere. “I really like the SMART Girls program where we talk about youth culture and what is going on in our world,” said Monica who is herself quite a centered, focused, kind teen with a very positive attitude. “I am very hard working and I believe you can do what you want to do in life with hard work and determination.” SMART Girls is a Boys & Girls Club program encouraging young women to have healthy attitudes and lifestyles, and helps them reach their full potential through dynamic sessions, group activities, field trips and mentoring opportunities with adult women.

Alana, eight, is a third grader at Landing Elementary School who also loves science, dance and music. She is currently involved in the Club’s Dance program and hopes to play the violin and join orchestra soon. She would like to become an elementary school teacher when she grows up. Alana joined the Club early this year and while a new member, she has already made a lot of friends and established a special bond with Health and Life Skills Instructor Elfrida Oni, as well as Group Leader Ms. Lyasia Milledge and Program Director, Ms. Jackie Tellerida. She truly enjoys being at the Club and the time she spends at the Club saying, “I really feel like this is my home away from home.” When she is not involved with the Dance program or playing with her friends, Alana can often be found helping staff.
