Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club June Youth of the Month

Junior Youth of the Month Victoria W., 10, is in the fifth grade at Landing Elementary School. She has been a Club member for five years. Victoria’s favorite subjects are math and English language arts. Victoria is also a bit of a historian and learning about and reading stories that take place in a time of war. One of her favorite books, A Thunderous Whisper by Christina Diaz Gonzalez, is about a young girl’s life during the Spanish Civil War. Because of her curiosity in conflicted regions and life under combat, Victoria aspires to help children whose lives are affected by warfare. She would like to pursue a career in philanthropy where she can be part of a global effort to bring food and vital necessities to children in need. Victoria, who enjoys dancing and participating in many Club activities, credits the Club for also encouraging her interest in helping others. “The Club has taught me that everyone can make a difference in the world.”

Ayjah C., 14, is in the eighth grade at Robert M. Finley Middle School. She is a very involved in school sports running track and field and playing volleyball, basketball and soccer. Ayjah’s favorite subjects are social studies and science but she excels in math. Ayjah plans on pursuing a medical degree and hopes to become a pediatrician where she can help young children. This is the second Senior Youth of the Month honor for Ayjah who was also recognized in April of 2015. Ayjah credits Teen Program Director Breanna Townsell, Associate Director Desirae O’Neill and Group Leader Lyasia Milledge for providing guidance and support throughout the six years she has been attending the Club. “The Club has been a strong and dependable place for me. I can count on the people here,” said Ayjah.
