Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Members Stellar Scholarship Recipients

Noah Stone and Neri Romero are Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club's 2017 Scholarship recipients.

Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club’s mission is to enable all young people to realize their full potential through a variety of after school programs designed to enrich and enhance the learning experience. Noah Stone, recipient of the Club’s Louis M. Sanford Scholarship and Northwell Glen Cove Hospital Scholarship, and Neri Romero, recipient of the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Scholarship are two success stories evidencing the Club is accomplishing its objectives.

Noah, 18, recipient of one of the Club’s most honorable scholarships, named for past Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Executive Director, Louis M. Sanford, who served the community and the Boys & Girls Club for more than 30 years. Noah has been a member of the Club since he was nine and credits the Club for helping him maintain his honor roll status throughout Middle School. A stellar student and independent, self-sufficient teen, Noah is also active in many sports including varsity basketball and traveling soccer team that won Long Island Junior Soccer Division Champs in 2013. Noah also was the recipient of the Long Island Junior Soccer Sportsmanship Award. “I believe my time with the Club was some of the most important time of my life because each and every day there was something new to learn. I also acquired leadership qualities and an understanding of responsibility” said Noah who can often be found volunteering at the Club. Noah, who also received the Northwell Glen Cove Hospital Scholarship, will be attending Hofstra University in the fall where he plans on pursuing a career in business and healthcare management.

Neri Romero, 18, is the recipient of the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a current Club member who demonstrates achievement in our three priority areas: academic success, good character and citizenship and a healthy lifestyle. Neri, who has been a member since he was 14, is one of our most outstanding youth. He started out as a carefree teen mostly interested in playing basketball at the Club and was also on the basketball team throughout high school where he was named captain of the Varsity team during his senior year. Neri also focused on school to keep his grades in good standing. He has completed some college level courses (SUPA) which was offered through Syracuse University. In addition to school and sports, Neri was an active participant in the Club’s Summer Youth Employment program. After successfully completing the program, Neri was hired as an SYE (Summer Youth Employee) for the Club’s Summer program as well as group leader during the school year. “The Summer Youth Employment program and working at the Club has helped me out a great deal. I’m working on becoming the first of my mother’s nine children to attend college,” said Neri who would like to pursue a career in physical education. “My experience at the Club as an SYE has made a lasting impression on me which encouraged me to combine my passion for sports with my care for the Club kids.” Neri will be attending SUNY Broome Community College in Binghamton in the fall.
