September’s Junior Youth of the Month, Claire L. is seven years old and in the second grade. She joined the Club’s Summer program and returned for the school season. She attends the Club every day where she enjoys playing in the Gymnasium or drawing in the Art Room. Her favorite color is pink and favorite animal is the turtle. She hopes to become a youtuber someday but for now is happy attending school and the Club which for Claire, represents a safe place to be and have fun.
September Senior Youth of the Month, Sebastian P. 10, also joined the Club this past Summer. For Sebastian and his family, the Club provides a safe place and indispensable adult supervision during the after-school hours. Sebastian is in the fifth grade and his favorite subject is math. He hopes to become a middle school math teacher when he graduates from college. He is actively engaged in many school-based activities including being a member of the school band where he plays the Trumpet. Sebastian is also an avid sportsman who prefers soccer and plans on joining a soccer league. When at the Club, he participates in many of the Club’s programs including art-based projects, triple play initiatives in the gymnasium and learning about innovative digital tools and interactive programs and platforms in the Technology Lab. Sebastian has a great appreciation for the Club. “I feel like the Club is my family.”

Another newcomer to the Club, Luis L., 10, was selected Senior Youth of the Month for October. Luis was not only new to the Club, but he was also new to the community, having moved to the Glen Cove area during the height of the COVID pandemic. “I like the Club a lot. It means a lot to me, and it helped me so much when we first moved here during COVID. I didn’t know anyone and being at the Club helped me to meet other kids and make friends. It made our move to the new neighborhood so much easier,” said Luis, who is in the sixth grade. He leans towards the sciences and math at school and hopes to follow in his mother’s or father’s careers and become either a pediatric nurse or a corrections officer, the latter being his first choice. He loves playing basketball and intends to join a basketball league next year. In addition to sports, he plays the clarinet and delights in playing video games. He attends the Club every day where he is often found participating in the Art Room, Learning center, Tech Lab or playing in the gymnasium with many of his new friends.
Santos, seven, is the Junior Youth of the Month for October. He is in the second grade and takes pride in exploring and participating in different experiences. “I want to learn a lot” is his motto, and why he appreciates the Club as much as he does. Santos attends the Club every day where he first order of business is to complete his homework assignments before taking on creative projects in the Art Room, improving math skills utilizing digital tools in the Technology Lab or playing with his friends in the gymnasium. While he enjoys a variety of sports including football, soccer, basketball, and ice hockey, he would ultimately like to become an artist. His favorite books are the Hi! Fly Guy series by Tedd Arnold and he is a big fan of Hip-Hop music.
