Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Month

Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club have started the 2022-2023 Program season by naming Nelson M. and Katherine M. Youth of the Month for September.

Nelson, eight, is a third grader who loves to play soccer. He excels in math at school but also likes to read and his favorite books series is No David by writer and illustrator David Shannon. Nelson first joined the Club through the Summer program and is now enrolled in the after-school program. He attends daily and participates in Homework Help initiatives before heading to the gymnasium to play sports with his friends. “I like coming to the Club because it is a safe place where people can be happy. The staff are kind and respect for everyone, and I like helping staff.” When not at school or at the Club, Nelson can be found building and creating houses from bricks and Jenga blocks and making paper airplanes. He sees a future career as a building engineer if his dream of becoming a professional soccer player does not work out. For now though, Nelson is cherishing special moments he spends with his father getting bagels on the weekends.

Katherine M. is twelve years old and in the seventh grade. Katherine gravitates towards the Arts but is free spirited and keeping an open mind about her future endeavors. For now, she is just focused on being a happy teenager, doing well in school, making friends, participating in the Club’s teen leadership programs and experiences, and navigating her way through these formidable years. She has been a member for nearly three years and during this time has bonded quite well with staff and peers. “This is a fun place, and the staff are great. They encourage us to us to support each other and I get to help the younger kids which makes me very happy.” Like so many teenagers her age, Katherine enjoys playing volleyball, video games and reading books from the horror and fantasy genre.

The Club’s Youth of the Month program recognizes stellar students who have made notable improvements in academics, personal growth, and overall Club spirit. For more information about Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club visit glencovebgc.org.
