Glen Cove Looks To Hire Harbor Masters

The City of Glen Cove is inviting residents to apply for the Harbor Master job openings. The City is looking to hire as many as five people.

According the Glen Cove Harbor Patrol Chief John Testa, Harbor Masters are peace officers that work during the boating season but have responsibilities year round.

Employees typically work between 100 and 150 hour per season and the starting pay rate is $8 per hour.

“If you have a passion for law enforcement and a love for the sea and boating, Harbor Master may be an ideal position for you,” Testa said in a press release. “We currently have twelve Glen Cove Harbor Masters and are recruiting to fill as many as five positions.”

Anyone interested in this position may obtain a job application from the City of Glen Cove’s Personnel Office located on the second floor of City Hall, located at 9 Glen St. in Glen Cove.

Job Responsibilities

  • Protecting the lives and property of boaters and residents over seven square miles of shoreline and 37 square miles of open water.
  • Regulating the issuance of all moorings in Glen Cove’s boundaries of Hempstead Harbor.
  • Maintaining navigable channels to ensure the safe and orderly flow of boating traffic in Glen Cove Creek, Hempstead Harbor and local waterways. Supervision is provided by ranking officers within the Harbor Patrol.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two year’s work experience in a related field or in the Armed Forces of the United States.

Applicants must also possess a Boater Safety Certification, a CPR Certification and a valid New York State Driver’s license.

Candidates are put through thorough screenings (similar to the screenings for Police Officer candidates) including background investigation, fingerprinting and a qualifying medical exam which includes a psychological exam, polygraph and drug testing.

Candidates are required to pass a practical exam in which they demonstrate the ability to swim unassisted and the ability to safely operate a power boat.

Once appointed by the Mayor and Glen Cove City Council, individuals are required to complete peace officer training (99 hours), weapons training (initial training is 47 hours), EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operators Course) training and candidates must maintain all of the listed certifications and licenses as a condition of employment.
