Leg. DeRiggi-Whitton Receives Community Leadership Award.
Since May is Senior Citizens Month, it is the perfect time of year to celebrate seniors and all that they have given to their communities.
The festivities during this year’s 9th Annual Senior Recognition Day, held Saturday, May 9, included food tastings from local businesses, music and vendor and information booths.
Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton was honored with the Bob Howard Community Leadership Award. “I was so flattered to have been chosen for this prestigious award,” Leg. DeRiggi-Whitton said. “The honor is near and dear to my heart since Bob Howard was a neighbor of mine for many years. He is truly missed, although his legacy will live on as long as Glen Cove celebrates Senior Recognition Day!”
For the past eight years, Delia has often visited the Glen Cove Senior Center with a basket of long-stem roses. She and the seniors who are celebrating birthdays that month talk about what they are thankful for and other special things happening in their lives, then all of the members sing a resounding chorus of “Happy Birthday to You!” Leg. DeRiggi-Whitton also worked with Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello to secure funds to replace the furnace at the Senior Center right before the winter started.
