The Downtown Cafe Knows Its Stuff
Patch visits popular eatery in Glen Cove's business district for a little taste testing.
Since 2004, The Downtown Cafe, a Glen Cove favorite, has not only expanded its menu options but has also extended the cafe to include a brick oven pizza place.
The cafe could be considered as one of a kind in the city because it's one of the few restaurants where you can dine, receive quality customer service and eat delicious food all at the same time.
I recently went to the cafe with a good friend, and we had a great time. To start, we ate the crispy toasted pita bread right after we were seated at a table. Then more great food followed.

For an appetizer, we ordered the cafe's Spinach Cheese Dip — a dish that is served in a French Onion soup bowl with tortilla chips — which was absolutely wonderful and reasonably priced at $10.25.
As a part of its revamped menu, the cafe added gourmet 12 inch Pizzettas as an option for customers. Since this visit was all about tasting different foods, I ordered the Calamari Fra Diavolo Pizzetta ($13.50), which features calamari in a spicy marinara basil sauce with mozzarella, and the calamari couldn't have tasted fresher.

My friend sampled the Buffalo Chicken Pizzetta ($12.50), and this pie came with bountiful grilled chicken pieces dipped in moderately hot buffalo sauce, and of course, light blue cheese drizzled on top. And if you're like my friend, someone who likes a lot of blue cheese, it's not a problem. The cafe gave us an extra cup on the side for free.
The cooks at the cafe said the pie serves two people, but we both could barely finish two slices of these huge portioned pies. Aside from the specialty pizza, the restaurant offers a wide variety of menu selections from salads, soups, wraps, pasta dishes and even a low carb section.
The crew down at The Downtown Cafe are on top of their expertise. They cater to their customers with a professional and friendly manner and the well-rounded service enabled two friends to have a phenomenal night.
And the fun continued until the next morning, because there's nothing better than eating plenty of leftover cold pizza. New York City does good pizza, but The Downtown Cafe does it better.
