GLEN COVE, NY — Tom Suozzi has been named the Democratic candidate for the special election to fill the 3rd Congressional District seat left vacant since George Santos was expelled last week.

"Tom Suozzi has a proven record of fighting for his constituents, fighting to safeguard our suburban way of life here on Long Island and Queens and always advocating for sensible solutions to the real challenges affecting everyday average Americans," said a joint statement from Nassau County Democratic Chair and Queens County Chair, Congressman Gregory Meeks.

"The folks from Massapequa and Levittown to the north shore of Nassau, to northeast Queens deserve better," Suozzi said in a statement. "I will work day and night with both parties to deliver for the people to make living here more affordable, safer, and better. I delivered for this district before, and I will do it again by putting you ahead of partisanship. Let’s reject the nonsense and get back to work. Let’s Fix This."

It would be a return to Congress and the 3rd District for Suozzi, who was the representative from 2017-2023, until a run for governor came up short against Kathy Hochul.

Before the party leaders named Suozzi for the special election ballot, he and Hochul met Wednesday to iron out any past issues and solidify the future for the Democrats, Jacobs confirmed.

"We look forward to working with the Suozzi Campaign, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to restore integrity, competence, and a focus on the real needs of our larger community in the Third Congressional District," the statement said.

Suozzi previously was a two-term Nassau County Executive

The election takes place on Feb. 13. Republicans are expected to choose their challenger early next week.
