Unemployment Rate Improves in Glen Cove

NYS Department of Labor releases study showing declining city unemployment rates.

Unemployment rates dropped in Glen Cove from 6.8 to 6.5 since July—a slight improvement in the local job market.

This rate dropped .05 percent since this time last year when the local jobless rate was 7 percent, according to the New York State Department of Labor.

The economic progress in Glen Cove has been drastic since January when the unemployment rate peaked at 9.5 percent.

Across Long Island, the job market is making a steady but slow comeback.

Long Island's jobless rate was 7 percent in August, down from 7.2 percent the month before and had 11,300 more private-sector jobs in August than it did in the previous year, a 1.1 percent increase according to the labor department release.

"It seems low, but that's the trend we've had from year-to-year," said Gary Huth, regional analyst for New York State Department of Labor, of the private-sector job growth. "After a deep hole, we need to be stronger to get out of that hole."

The county's rate follows Long Island's economic trend.

Nassau's unemployment rate is down .2 percentage points from this time last year, dropping from 7.0 percent to 6.8 percent.
