10 Year Old Wins Essay Contest

Rebecca Ashirzadeh of Roslyn Heights was named the Great Neck branch winner of the Astoria Federal Savings annual Teach Children to Save essay contest.
The contest, which recognitizes financial literacy month, asks children ages 5-12 to complete the statement: “If I save a lot today, in the future I could …”
Nearly 1,000 essays were received from neighborhood branches throughout Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, Brooklyn and Westchester.

In her wining essay, Ashirzadeh, 10, described ways she plans to use her savings including buying a house, helping the less fortunate by buying food, donating clothes and cheering up sick children.
Ashirzadeh received a $25 American Express Gift Card, a Teach Children to Save Certificate and an Education First medal from Branch Manager Jennifer Rizzo in lake Success last month.
