2 Elderly People, Home Care Aide Rescued From Great Neck Estates House Fire

BREAKING: A police officer was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after assisting in the Thursday night rescue.

Two elderly people and their home care aide were rescued from a heavy fire that was spreading to their home in Great Neck Estates on Thursday night, police say.

According to authorities, an officer on patrol followed the sight of heavy black smoke to find a residential garage fully engulfed in flames and spreading to the home on Bayview Avenue at 5:43 p.m.

Members of the Vigilant and Alert Fire Departments, a Nassau County Police officer and a Great Neck Estates Police officer searched the home for occupants and located three people inside. An 85-year-old man, an 84-year-old woman and a 48-year-old woman home care aide were taken out to safety. The three people found inside the home were treated at the scene.

During the rescue, the Nassau County Police officer sustained smoke inhalation and was later transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The Arson Bomb Squad and the Nassau County Fire Marshal responded to the scene and will continue to investigate the blaze. Police say it has been deemed non-suspicious at this time.
