What is the difference between Juvederm and Botox

Learn the differnce with the different fillers that can help with wrinkles.

As a plastic surgeon a new patient who presents for anti aging advise will typically ask the difference between Juvederm and Botox. I explain that although both can help with wrinkles they work differently. Botox is a purefied protein that can slow down muscle action. Its effect is seen when we are animated. That is to say when we are moving our faces as we do when we are frowning or smiling. Juvederm is a filler that can add volume to tissue depleted areas. Its effect is noted at rest as these tissue depleted areas have been filled.

First off, there must be an evaluation of the face and the concerns of the patient need to be addressed. As we age there is loss of tissue volume. We may see hollowness under the eyes as the cheek mound drops. Lines may also become deeper on the forehead as well as around the eyes and mouth. If the patient is complaining about lines that form when smiling such as the crows feet or lines that are forming on the forehead from raising the eyebrow (suprised look) then Botox would be the agent of choice. If the patient would like to improve the lines that run from the mose to the mouth (nasolabial lines) or the lines that form under the mouth (marionette lines) then Juvederm would be the agent of choice.

I do use other fillers. For the hollowness under the eyes I prefer Boletero as there is less chance of lumps forming in this area that has such thin skin. The lip is another are that has thin skin and risk of lumps are a concern, a thinner injectable should be used in this area as well. If there is hollowness in the cheek area then I prefer Radiesse as this can add volume to an aging face restoring a youthful look. There are a number of anti-aging injectables on the market, they each are a little differnent and should be used based on the needs of the patient.
