Empty In Great Neck: Plaza Shops

Multiple store vacancies greet holiday shoppers downtown.

For shoppers in Great Neck Plaza, one common site on display in storefronts this holiday season is "For Rent" signs.

Walk down South Middle Neck Road in the Plaza and you will notice vacancies on most blocks, a possible indication of the hard economic times the area and the country are facing.

Great Neck Patch will continue to spotlight these vacant properties to foster discussion in the community on what can, should and could be done to rehab some of these these abandoned places.

This week's focus: a shopping center across from the Long Island Rail Road Station where at least five businesses have moved out.

With more than 250 shops and restaurants, including some of the region’s most unique and exciting boutiques, Great Neck Plaza has something for everyone, at every price range, according to the Great Neck Business Improvement District website.

But although BID incentives like the ongoing Shop to Save Holiday Sweepstakes might help to bring in customers, it's safe to say that store varieties are currently at less than optimum levels.

Included in the list of business casualties are some once-popular Great Neck establishments of days gone by — each now empty.

located for decades at the corner of South Station Plaza and Middle Neck Road, where many went to a special hairdo for important occasions, is now just a memory.

Also collecting more dust than customers these days is the former Medicine Avenue Pharmacy at 8 Middle Neck Road in the Plaza.

Tell us in the comments section: What do you think should go in these vacant locations? Why are so many storefronts empty in the Plaza? What can be done by local officials to help?
