A Great Neck doctor and his pharmacist wife were arraigned Thursday for owing New York State more than $60,000 and failing to file three years’ worth tax returns, Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said.

Doctor Tom Hopkins, 51, and pharmacist Annahid Hopkins, 38, were each charged with three counts of third-degree criminal tax fraud and repeated failure to file personal income and earnings taxes.

According to a joint investigation by the NCDA and the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, the couple failed to file tax returns for tax years 2010, 2011 and 2012, despite owing $63,198 in taxes. The Hopkins’ combined annual income during these years were reportedly at least $400,000, $350,000 and $125,000, respectively.

“Medical professionals should know that a loss in taxpayer revenue can hurt public health and safety, but these defendants are now alleged to have cheated New York State out of more than $60,000 over the course of several years,” Singas said in a press release.

Mr. Hopkins surrendered himself to DA investigators on March 30 and Mrs. Hopkins surrendered herself to investigators on April 1.

The husband and wife were released on their own recognizance and are due back in court on May 6. They both could face a maximum sentence of 1 ⅓ to 4 years in prison if convicted of any of the counts.
