Great Neck High School Sports Notebook

Patch will get you caught up on all your local sports action from April 1-7.

There are so many sports out in the Great Neck area, it can be a full-time job just sifting through all of the action. Luckily, you have Patch and we will get you caught up in one convenient place each week.

Here’s what the local Great Neck teams have been up to this week:

Great Neck North:

Baseball: The Blazers had a rough first week of the season dropping all their of their games. On April 1 they lost 10-0 to Jericho. Jake Gantman posted four RBI thanks to a three-run double and Michael Goren struck out 10 in six innings.

On April 2 the boys lost a close one 6-5 to West Hempstead on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh by Joe Bitetto. Schreiber received the loss.

On April 4 the Blazers were defeated 13-7 by New Hyde Park. Anthony Simone was the star of the game as he went 5-5 with six RBI and received the victory as he tossed the final four innings. Dan Rutkin was the losing pitcher.

Softball: The girls lost their only game this week by the mind-boggling score of 20-12 to Roosevelt. Pomerantz hit a home run for Great Neck South, but was the losing pitcher. Jade Reid recorded six RBI for Roosevelt.

Boys Lacrosse: Despite playing only one game this week, the boys made the most out of it as they cruised to a 20-0 victory over Bishop Loughlin. Four players recorded multiple goals, highlighted by Desmond Scanlon's seven and Gavin Schwartz with five.

Great Neck South:

Baseball: In their lone game, the Rebels were victorious by the score of 12-10 over Westbury on April 6. Justin Rose was able to win his first career Varsity game and the offense was led by Sam Stempler who was 3-3 with three SB and three RBI in the win. 

Softball: It may seem like a typo, but the girls put on an absolute performance in their two games this week. On April 3 they defeated Elmont by the score of 19-0. Chrissie Vissichelli was the winning pitcher in the game.

The girls found a way to improve on that game as they defeated Westbury 31-6 on April 5. Dylan Livers and Danielle Michaels both homered inthe victory with Michaels posting a 4-5 game with four RBI.

Boys Lacrosse: On April 3 the Rebels were routed 14-6 by Planview JFK. Dago Rodriguez posted a solid eight saves in the game but Brent Epler and Shane Lenahan both scored three goals for Plainview.

The boys bounced back by defeating Glen Cove 13-7 on April 5. Ben Todaro scored four goals with three of them coming within 1:48 of each other. Three other players scored multiple goals.

Girls Lacrosse: On April 1 the girls were defeated 14-5 by Roslyn. Allison Schneider was the star of the game amassing four goals and four assists. 

They also lost on April 3 by the score of 20-12 at the hands of Bellmore JFK despite five goals from their own Jill Weihs and four from Sam Rickey. Kerri Baum led the way with seven goals from Bellmore.
