Great Neck Sports Notebook: April 22-28

Here’s what the local Great Neck teams have been up to this week:
Great Neck North:
Baseball: The Blazers had another rough week as they got swept by Bethpage to bring their winless streak to five straight. On April 22 it was a 3-2 defeat. Chris Stein threw a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts for the win.The next day they were defeated 13-3. Francisco Almanzar was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.They also lost on April 25 by the score of 5-2. Ambie Veras tossed an impressive three-hit shutout with no walks and 12 strikeouts in the victory.
Softball: The girls were defeated on April 23 by Malverne 13-1. Kim Danns was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the victory.They also were topped on April 25 by Lynbrook by the score of 10-3. Meghan Montine was 2-for-3 with three runs scored for Lynbrook.
Boys Lacrosse: The Blazers lost their only game of the week by the score of 8-7 to their rivals, Great Neck South. Despite the loss, Desmond Scanlon scored four times and recorded an assist in the loss.
Girls Lacrosse: The girls lost two of their three games this week. On April 22 they fell 18-7 to Bellmore JFK. Kerri Baum had five goals in the game.However, they bounced back on April 24 by the score of 11-7 over Elmont. Sabrina Damaghi scored three times and Michele Schapira added two goals.They lost on April 26 to Glen Cove by the score of 12-9. The star of the game was Gabby Morrocu who scored eight goals and recorded an assist in the game.
Great Neck South:
Baseball: The boys had their undefeated season spoiled with a three-game sweep by Sewanhaka. On April 22 it was an 8-6 loss. Manny Nunez was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI in the game.
The next day it was a 7-3 loss. Nick Dempsey was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. He also recorded the win, tossing six inning and yielding three runs.
The sweep was completed on April 25 by a score of 12-8. Freshman Nico Rullo was 4-for-5 with two RBI.
Softball: The girls won two of their three games this week. On April 22 they defeated Elmont 15-7. Carly Hirshon was the winning pitcher for GNS.
The next day they routed Westbury 16-1. Amanda Zeitlin filled up the stat sheet, finishing 3-for-3 with two singles, one double, four RBI and three runs scored.On April 25 they were routed by 19-4 by Freeport. Kaylinn Ellis finished 2-for-3 with a grand slam. Diana Tavares hit a home run as well.
Boys Lacrosse: The Rebels won both of their games this week. On April 22 they defeated New Hyde Park 14-11. Ben Todaro scored four goals and had three assists.On April 25 they defeated Great Neck North 8-7. Once again Todaro led the scoring with two goals. Vincent Patrey also scored two goals in the game.
Girls Lacrosse: On April 22 the girls fell to Wheatley 12-10. Sam Rickey scored five goals for GNS. Jill Weihs added three goals as well.They were however victorious over Elmont on April 26 by the score of 14-12. Steph Ross had four goals and two assists in the game.
