Great Neck Sports Notebook: April 8-14

Patch will get you caught up on all your local sports action.

There are so many sports out in the Great Neck area, it can be a full-time job just sifting through all of the action. Luckily, you have Patch and we will get you caught up in one convenient place each week.

Here’s what the local Great Neck teams have been up to this week:

Great Neck North:

Baseball: The Blazers had a difficult week as they dropped all three of their games. On April 8 they were upended by North Score 6-2. Ryan Perro was the winning pitcher, he had a solid start as he tossed five shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out four.

The next day they lost 15-5 to Island Trees. Oddly, the score was tied 2-2 in the fifth when Island Trees broke out and posted 13-runs beginning with a two RBI hit by John Obremski.

On April 11 they lost a close one, 4-2, to Floral Park. Chris Stefl tossed a complete game, yielding two runs and striking out five. Henry Cochran had the decisive RBI single in the fifth inning.

Softball: The girls had a successful week, winning two of their three games. They lost the first one on April 4 in a slugfest, 20-12, to Roosevelt. Jade Reid led the Roosevelt attack with a 3-5 performance with six RBI. Pomerantz took the loss for GNN, but hit a home run.

On April 8 they defeated Lawrence 5-2. The winning pitcher was freshman Jessica Weiss who recorded her first win with a complete game victory while recording nine strikeouts. Joyce Gallo was 2-2 with an RBI.

On April 10 they defeated Malverne 9-6. Jessica Weiss was the winning pitcher once again. GNN scored seven of their runs in the second inning. Joyce Gallo hit a home run.

Boys Lacrosse: On April 9 the Blazers fell to Lynbrook 11-5. Despite the loss Matthew Monahemi recorded 16 saves in goal. Robert Campbell and Evan Dorman both amassed two goals.

On April 10 they beat Portledge 12-3 thanks to Robert Campbell's career-high seven goals. Not to be outdone, Evan Dorman added three goals and five assists.

They also defeated Lawrence on April 12 by the score of 23-9. The story of the game was Robert Campbell scoring an incredible 13 goals. Desmond Scanlon recorded three goals but his biggest contribution was 12 assists.

Girls Lacrosse: The girls won both of their games this week. On April 8 they defeated West Hempstead 15-7. Stephanie Epstein had four goals and one assists, and Michele Schapira recorded three goals and two assists as well.

Their next win came on April 11 over Malverne/East Rockaway by the score of 14-13. The winning goal was scored by Michele Schapira with 39 seconds left to give GNN the victory. It was her fourth goal of the game. Stephanie Epstein led the scoring with five goals.

Great Neck South:

Baseball: The Rebels won all four games this week to improve their undefeated record to 6-0. On April 6 they defeated Westbury 12-10. Justin Rose won his first varsity game. The offense was led by Sam Stempler who went 3-3 with three stolen bases and three RBI.

On April 8 they shutout Hempstead 15-0. Teddy Zharinitsky was terrific, tossing a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in the win.

The next day they beat Hempstead 15-2. Sam Weinbaum went 2-3 with five RBI to lead the offense. Thomas Kelly hit a home run, and the winning pitcher was Anthony Ortiz.

The Blazers completed the sweep on April 11 with a 13-2 win. Aaron Brenner and Sam Stempler both went 3-4 with two RBI .

Softball: The girls posted an incredible offense performance on April 5 over Westbury with a 31-6 win. Dylan Livers and Danielle Michaels each homered. Michaels was 4-5 with four RBI and Livers was 4-5 with two RBI.

On April 8 they lost 9-3 to Freeport. Yalitza Rodriguez and Rebekah Cruz led the offense with two RBI each.

They recovered to defeat Uniondale 8-5 on April 11. In addition to being the winning pitcher, Chrissie Vissichelli hit the go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth to lead GNS to the win.

Boys Lacrosse: On April 5 the Blazers defeated Glen Cove 13-7. Ben Todaro scored four goals, with three of them coming in the third quarter. Dago Rodriguez posted seven saves.

However, they were defeated on April 8 by Mepham 16-9. Matt Byrne led the scoring with eight goals, with Chris Vento adding three goals and dishing out five assists.

Girls Lacrosse: They girls lost their lone game of the week to Sewanhaka by the score of 14-13. Skylar Shimansky scored the winning goal with 30 seconds remaining. Sam Rickey scored four goals for GNS.
