Great Neck Sports Roundup: April 29 – May 5

There are so many sports out in the Great Neck area, it can be a full-time job just sifting through all of the action. Luckily, you have Patch and we will get you caught up in one convenient place each week.
Here’s what the local Great Neck teams have been up to this week:
Great Neck North:
Baseball: The Blazers had a rough week, dropping all three games to Glen Cove. On April 29 it was a 14-3 loss. Anthony Martino went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run to lead Glen Cove.
The next day Glen Cove shutout Great Neck North by the score of 13-0. Once again, Martino was the star as he tossed a four-hit shutout and went 1-for-3 with three runs scored.
Glen Cove completed the sweep on May 2 with a 5-0 shutout. Tommy Zeigen fired a six-hit shutout with nine strikeouts. Jahrae O'Neill went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Softball: On April 29 the girls topped Roosevelt 13-1. Jessica Weiss was the winning pitcher and Joyce Gallo helped her out with a home run.
They were shutout on April 30 by the score of 4-0 to Lynbrook. Bridget Greene fired a one-hit shutout with one walk and five strikeouts. The only hit she allowed was an infield single. Christy Tuzzio hit a home run.
Boys Lacrosse: The Blazer won both of their games this week. On April 30 they routed Sewanhaka 12-4. Robert Campbell led the way with six goals. Evan Dorman added three goals.
They also won big over Glen Cove 15-3 on May 3. Robert Campbell and Ryan King both scored four goals to lead the scoring. Desmond Scanlon contributed two goals and four assists.
Girls Lacrosse: Unfortunately the girls lost both games this week. On April 30 they were dropped 11-6 by Wheatley. Julia Balboni, Maria Mazzolla and Ariana Zetlin all scored three goals.
On May 3 they dropped a close one to Carey 12-11. The game was tied with two seconds to go when Kim McGrath scored to win the game. Despite the loss, Stephanie Epstein scored three goals for Great Neck North.
Great Neck South:
Baseball: On April 29 the Rebels defeated Westbury 18-6. Thomas Kelly had an incredible game at the plate going 5-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and four runs scored.
The boys also won big on May 2 over Hempstead 14-4. Steven Farkas led the way with a 5-for-6 performance, driving in four and scoring five of his own. Thomas Kelly hit two home runs in the win.
On May 3 the Blazers were dropped 9-4 by Friends Academy. Neil Boneparth went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Softball: The girls were edged on April 29 by Uniondale 9-8. The decisive run came in on a two-run home run by Tyler Smith in the sixth inning. Smith finished with four RBI and three runs scored.
On May 1 they were also defeated 9-3 by Port Washington. Alex Caprariello was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run and fanning six in the win.
Boys Lacrosse: On April 30 the Rebels defeated Herricks 15-4. Ben Todaro was the star of the game, scoring five goals and assisted on two. Vincent Patrey added three goals.
On May 2 they were stomped 14-4 by Jericho. Michael Blumberg scored five first half goals and Noah Starr added three with three assists.
Girls Lacrosse: The girls dropped two of three this week. On April 29 they lost 19-10 to Carey. In the losing effort, Steph Ross scored four goals and Jill Weihs added three of her own.
On May 1 they also lost 15-8 to Glen Cove. Gabby Morrocu was a one-girl show as she amassed nine goals in the game.
Two days later they defeated Hempstead 14-3. Sam Rickey reached a milestone, scoring her 50th goal of the season and added an assist in the win.
