Cause Of Fire Determined: Synagogue Left With Damage After Fire In Great Neck: NCFM
Fire marshals said they observed a fire in a crawl space under the stairs, and the sprinkler system kept the fire contained.
GREAT NECK PLAZA, NY — A fire left a Great Neck synagogue with damage on Wednesday night, fire marshals said.
Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office said the Great Neck Vigilant Fire Department received a call for heavy smoke at 8:48 p.m. and responded to North Shore Sephardic Synagogue on Cuttermill Road, along with NCPD.
Upon arrival, fire marshals said they saw the 2-story synagogue with heavy smoke on the interior and located the fire in a crawl space under the stairs. Occupants of the building self-evacuated, fire marshals said.

As of Wednesday night, no injuries were reported, fire marshals said.
The fire was under investigation by NCFM's Office and the NCPD Arson Bomb Squad, and deemed the fire non-suspicious, fire marshals said. The cause was determined to be in relation to power equipment, fire marshals said.

According to fire marshals, workers in the building utilized power equipment, which led to the storage under the staircase they were working on to catch fire, fire marshals said. The building's fire sprinkler system held the fire to the room of origin, fire marshals said.
Due to the fire and smoke damage, the synagogue was vacated by NCFM Fire Inspectors, and the Village of Great Neck Plaza Building Inspector will assess when the synagogue can reopen for services, fire marshals said.
The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes with approximately 75 firefighters on scene, fire marshals said.
Mutual aid fire departments from Great Neck Alerts, Manhasset Lakeville, and New Hyde Park assisted Great Neck Vigilant FD.
