Hail Cesar: Blazers Win Again

Turning tragedy into triumph, the Great Neck North football team continues to impress.

With a 7-0 defensive struggle against Roslyn Saturday, the Blazers remained unbeaten on the year after  less than two weeks before the season opener. 

"We're 2-0 and I'll take that any day as a head coach," said Chris Cesar, the team's former defensive coordinator who took over as head coach following the untimely .

The gutsy Great Neck North home performance this week follows an Sept. 7.

"It wasn't as nice as last week, we were a little sloppy," said Cesar, who admitted the team took a step back in practice this week. "But that's on the coaches and we'll get after it again.

At 2-0, the Blazers have doubled their wins from last year. Cesar said he was pleased with his team's performance early in the season.

"We're 2-0 and I'll take that any day as a head coach," Cesar said.

Also appreciated by the players and coaches were the the this weekend to lend their support. The coach said said it was "amazing."

"If they can keep doing this through the season we will be unbelievable grateful," said Cesar.

After frustrating Roslyn (0-2) most of the afternoon with a strong defensive performance which included a key goal line stand late in the game, a long third-quarter run by Justin Nessimi and an Adam Harber added the extra point was enough to get the win for the Blazers.

Harber hit the crossbar on a failed 21-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. One of several deep Blazer drives which came up empty in the second half.

Senior quarterback Byron Azizi said, after working hard in practice all week, the team stuck together and executed well Saturday. 

"We've got some tough guys who made some big plays so we got the win," said Azizi. "Hopefully we'll score a little more in the red zone because we missed a few opportunities there."

The Blazers next face Friends Academy (0-2) in Great Neck Sept. 22.
