Keeping your feet dry in the wet winter weather requires more than just good winter boots. You need the right sock, too.
Dr. William Spielfogel, chair of podiatry at Lenox Hill Hospital, recommends people wear socks with a wicking material, which pulls moisture away from the body.
“People are under the perception that maybe you should wear two pair of socks,” Spielfogel said. “That’s not really a good idea because you can get a lot of friction, especially if you’re sweating. It’s a good idea to get yourself a really good pair of socks that will wick away the sweat.”

While it’s important to wear water-proof shoes in the winter, the synthetic materials they are made from may cause your feet to sweat, making the wicking material in socks that much more important.
“If you’re feet are sweating a lot and its cold outside your feet will get even colder,” Spielfogel said. “This is a perfect breeding ground for fungal infections. That’s why it’s important to make sure that you keep your feet clean and dry.”
