The website ranked the different towns, villages and cities in the state based on a variety of crime metrics sourced from the FBI across 210 NY cities.

According to its website, ValuePenguin collected the most recent crime data available from the 2014 FBI crime statistics by city, excluding towns with fewer than 5,000 residents since they are more sensitive to crime score fluctuations for fewer crimes committed.
