Mindlessly Watching TV Can Kill You

A New York cardiologist says a recent study about how watching several hours of TV each day can prematurely kill someone is another reminder that people need to remain active.

The issue with watching TV for a prolonged period of time is that it can become mindless and open up the door to other bad habits, such as eating unhealthy foods or food in large quantities, saysEvelina Grayver, MD, director of the coronary care unit at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. This kind of sedentary lifestyle and behavior can lead to high blood pressure, higher cholesterol, stroke and diabetes, she says.

One way to combat this is by exercising while watching TV.

“I think that dealing with stress is very important and if watching TV is part of your stress reduction, I think that that’s fine, except that we need to keep active while doing so,” Dr. Grayver says. “And the best way to do that is to potentially have a treadmill or an elliptical or a stationary bicycle and watching TV while you’re actually exercising, but I also understand the expense of that equipment. And that’s why … potentially having a jump rope or a hula hoop or even stretching for that matter would definitely be helpful.”
