More Than 500 Registered For Aging In Place Initiative Event Wednesday

Event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the North Hempstead "Yes We Can" Community Center in Westbury.

Project Independence, the Town of North Hempstead’s aging in place initiative, in conjunction with Hofstra University and the North Shore LIJ Health System, will be hosting an Aging in Place in Suburbia Conference & Expo on Aug. 21.

The event is designed to provide information from more than 100 exhibitors on how technology impacts health care, transportation, travel, home construction, fitness, socialization, safety and other areas of particular concern for Long Islanders looking to remain in their own homes as they grow older.

Town officials say, more than 500 seniors have pre-registered for the event which runs Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the North Hempstead “Yes We Can” Community Center, located at 141 Garden St., Westbury.

Speaker times include:

  • 9:30 a.m.:  Michael Dowling, president and CEO, North Shore LIJ Health System and Lawrence Levy, executive dean, National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University.
  • 9:45 a.m.:  North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman.
  • 10:15 a.m.:  Rep. Steve Israel, D-Huntington.
