Nassau Man Tried To Scam Senior Out Of Thousands: Police

Police say they caught him as he was trying to pick up money from an 85-year-old man.

A Roosevelt man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after Nassau police say he tried to swindle an elderly Manhasset man out of thousands of dollars.

According to police, an 85-year-old man received a phone call on June 3 saying that his grandson needed money because he had been arrested in Atlantic City. The man was told to bring $8,000 to an address on Plandome Road. The man then gave the money to an unknown person.

The next day, on June 4, the received another phone call saying that his grandson needed more money for legal fees. He was told to bring $5,000 to the same location. This time, the man called the police.

Detectives responded to the location with the man. Police say they were approached by George Rodriguez, 31, of Nassau Road, Roosevelt. He was placed under arrest without incident.

Rodriguez was charged with third-degree attempted grand larceny. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
