‘Unknown Oil Substance’ Leaked Into Manhasset Bay: Coast Guard
Nassau police Marine Bureau and Great Neck firefighters also responded after an "unknown oil substance" was found Tuesday, authorities said.
GREAT NECK, NY — An unknown oil substance was found leaking from a storm drain in the parking lot of a BMW dealership on East Shore Road into Manhasset Bay in Great Neck on Tuesday, U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Anthony Pappaly said.
Nassau County police were notified about the “substance” at about 3:15 p.m. and the Marine Bureau responded, a police spokesman said. The nearby coast guard command was notified by someone who saw what looked like a “rainbow sheen” in the water, Pappaly said.
Firefighters from Great Neck Alert Fire Company “found the leak was coming from a storm drain” in the parking lot of a nearby BMW dealership and it was determined to be an “unknown oil substance,” Pappaly said. The leak was stopped with absorbent pads, he said.
