Interview: Hughes Talks Great Neck, NY Rangers

2002 Olympic gold medalist speaks about hometown while attending U.S. Figure Skating Championships last month.

While attending the 2013 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships last month in Nebraska, local sports hero Sarah Hughes talked about growing up in Great Neck and her childhood connection to the New York Rangers.

"I grew up with a rink in our park district that was just five minutes from our house," said Hughes in a video interview with Omaha.com. "There's six kids in our family, so when we were younger we we would go there as a family."

In the interview posted Jan. 24, Hughes also reflects on her time performing in front of 19,000 hockey fans at Madison Square Garden while still in elementary school.

"My relationship with the Rangers goes way, way back," said Hughes. "Now I'm just a fan."

A graduate of Great Neck North High School and Yale University, Hughes was in Omaha as part of the icenetwork.com broadcast team covering the skating championships.
