Senior Care Resource Fair Planned For Friday

To aid families in navigating the vast network of services available to seniors, the Town of North Hempstead Town Board will present their "aging in place" initiative July 19.

Hosted by Project Independence, the Project Independence Community Resource Fair is designed to give residents a one-stop venue for information and education on senior care.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Great Neck Senior Center, 80 Grace Ave.

Exhibitors include St. Francis Hospital, Winthrop University Hospital, the Dept. of Veterans Affairs, Great Neck Historical Society, the Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation, NYS Department of Health, Abilities Inc., the Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation, AAA, Nutri Source, Great Neck Family Foot Care, Laffey Fine Homes Senior Real Estate Specialists , Harvest Houses, Captel Phones, Karl Loshak LTC, Metro Physical Therapy, Family & Children's Association and the Great Neck Arts Council among many others.

"Our ultimate goal with Project Independence is to enable seniors to live as independently as possible," said North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman. "This resource fair is aimed at providing them with the information they need to help them live happier and healthier lives in their communities."

North Hempstead's Project Independence connects seniors and their families to a host of services and providers including visiting nurses, social workers, handymen, taxi transportation for medical visits and food shopping. It also provides recreational and educational programs.

By dialing 311, a resident can connect with a Project Independence staffer, who will help them find answers to a particular question, track down information or tap into valuable services such as health screenings, immunizations and information about managing medications. Project Independence also offers caregiver support, support groups for those coping with illness, depression or loss, as well as volunteer opportunities.

Residents are invited to visit the fair where attendees will be treated to a light lunch and have their name entered in a raffle drawing.
