Woman Was Drunk, Speeding In Lexus With 17-Month-Old Boy Inside: Cops

Police had pulled her over for speeding, swerving and failing to stay in a single lane. A 17-month-old boy was in the backseat.

GREAT NECK, NY – A 32-year-old woman was arrested on a felony DWI charge under Leandra's Law after police say she drove drunk with a 17-month-old boy in the car early Sunday.

According to Nassau Police, a Third Precinct officer observed a 2016 Lexus NX going eastbound on Northern Boulevard and Aster Lane around 2:19 a.m. The car was speeding, swerving and failing to stay in a single lane, police said.

Upon stopping the vehicle, the officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and observed that she had glassy eyes and slurred speech. The driver, 32-year-old Martha Castro, was placed under arrest.

A 17-month-old boy was in the backseat, police said. The child's mother was also in the car.

Castro, of Roslyn, was charged with aggravated DWI, DWI, endangering the welfare of a child. She was arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead and released on her own recognizance.
