Basement Fire Occurs At Melville Home

A basement fire broke out at a Melville home, causing smoke throughout the house.

MELVILLE, NY—A basement fire occurred at a Melville home on Saturday, causing smoke throughout the house, P.I.O. Steve Silverman announced on Sunday.

A contents fire broke out in the basement of a home on Crandon Street around 9:42 a.m., prompting the Melville Fire Department to respond. The blaze was quickly contained with a one hose line-in operation.

The fire appeared to be an accident, though the Huntington Town Fire Marshal and Suffolk Police Arson Squad are investigating.

40 firefighters and rescue personnel were dispatched with two engines, a quint, three ambulances, safety officers and fire police, under the direction of Chief Chris Nolan, supported by Assistant Chiefs Dave Kaplan, Bill Schmitt and Jason Bernfeld.
