When the U.S. Open was last played in 1997 at Congressional Country Club, the eighteenth hole was played as the 17th hole. But the 18th hole, which was a fairly simple par 3 across the pond, was merely an afterthought. The real action that defined the tournament took place at the 17th hole.
It was at the 17th hole that Tom Lehman rinsed his ball and in the process killed his best chance at winning a U.S. Open.
