SOS- Save our Schoolhouse ! Half Hollow of Old!

SOS-Help Save our Schoolhouse, keep the spirits and spirit alive. Time is running out on a last remnant of school days gone by.

SOS

A plea to the people of Half Hollow and Dix Hills……

The Lower Half Hollow Schoolhouse served as a school from 1895 – 1931. It is one of a very small number of one room schoolhouses left in our area and it remains as one of only two Half Hollow Hills one-room schoolhouses that are still in existence today. The schoolhouse is located at 5 Seaman Neck road , sitting quietly next to the Paumanok Elementary School.

As home to the Half Hollow Historical Association, the Lower Schoolhouse has always sparked interest and curiosity. Former students of the schoolhouse have shared their experiences from many perspectives. Herman Baruch, Charles Gould and Captain Kidd all came alive within these walls. In today’s fast-paced information ridden hours, the Lower Half Hollow Schoolhouse is a remnant of our early beginnings, when out lives moved more slowly and the town was small.

Marjory Blachly, descendant of Moses Blachly the first postmaster of Huntington, had a vision for the Half Hollow Historical Association when she founded the organization in 2003. Unexpectedly, she passed away in 2009, before she could truly complete her work. Marjory, herself a former educator, would have been thrilled to know that the schoolhouse was saved as a monument to our early educational history. In June of 2011 we were happy to receive a historical marker from the town of Huntington that stands proudly out front.

Sadly, Marjory’s family does not share the dream and they are looking toward selling this property as soon as possible. If that happens, not only would the Half Hollow Historical Association lose their home, but the Lower Schoolhouse would cease to exist, as we now know it

Do not allow the Lower Half Hollow Schoolhouse to fall prey to the lack of foresight which let the Upper Half Hollow Schoolhouse be burned as a fire department training exercise and the Hills School be demolished by developers. Please encourage the Town of Huntington to acquire this property to preserve a very important historic structure. We the members of this small historical association are willing to maintain it but unfortunately we can not afford to make the purchase ourselves. We need your help !

Please help Save Our School!
