Drunken Driver Charged In Death Of Pedestrian In Suffolk: Police

The pedestrian was trying to cross the road when they got struck by a man accused of driving while drunk, police say.

MELVILLE, NY — A man was charged with DWI in connection with a car crash that killed a pedestrian in Melville on Friday night, Suffolk police said.

Shane Decamp, 48, of Coram, was driving a 2016 Mazda CX-5 southbound in front of 400 Broadhollow Road around 9:35 p.m. Friday when his vehicle struck a pedestrian who was trying to cross the roadway from east to west, police said.

The pedestrian, whose name was withheld by police pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Decamp was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check, and police are continuing to investigate. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
