HHH 5K and Wellness Fair to Promote Healthy Living

School district taking on fitness and nutrition in annual fair and race to combat childhood obesity.

As childhood obesity rates are on the rise, the Half Hollow Hills School District is doing its part to educate and motivate youngsters about healthy living.

On Sunday, Nov. 6, the district and PTA council will host the fourth Annual Wellness Fair and 5K Walk/Run at  from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The 5k Race is a LITF Certified Course of scenic routes in Dix Hills beginning at 9:30 a.m. The "Start" will be in front of the Half Hollow Hills High School East at Vanderbilt Parkway and will finish in the parking lot of the high school.

There is also a free Children’s Fun Run beginning at 9 a.m.

“This run/walk is terrific,” said Patrick Murphy, the district director of health and physical education. “Not only is it visually beautiful, but it is also quite challenging running the hilly, tree lined streets of Dix Hills.  There are very few courses like this one.”

Following the race, all Half Hollow Hills community members are invited to stop by the free Wellness Fair at Hills East. Vendors will be on hand to offer healthy eating and fitness activities. Huntington Hospital will provide free blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol screenings, and local chiropractors will offer massages.

There will also be tools for the whole family to live a healthy lifestyle including information for those looking to quit smoking, as well as stroke prevention, cancer, heart and diabetic information.

“The Half Hollow Hills School District and PTA have been working hard to make a difference in our children's lives.  Our mission is to not only educate them, but to teach life-long habits of eating healthy and exercising each day,” Christina Noriega, the event coordinator for the PTA council said. “We have created this event to promote good health and set goals and give free education to our community and children to live a healthy lifestyle.  This year we will continue this event and it will be bigger and better than ever.”

This year’s Wellness Fair will launch the District’s participation in the “Fuel-Up to Play 60” program, a nationwide movement focused on fighting childhood obesity by challenging kids to take control of their own health.

All students in grades 12 and under can participate for $5 if pre-registered before Oct. 28.  After that date, student registration will be $10. Adult registration is $20. The first 300 to register will receive a long sleeve shirt and goodie bag. The first 100 kids to register for the fun run will receive a medal. Awards and prizes will be presented to the top finishers in each category.  Registration is from 7:30 a.m. – 9 a.m.
